What is the significance of February 2nd? Every year on this day, local citizens gather to await the arrival of the Groundhog Day Sprinkler. This local Long Beach legend emerges from the ground and looks to spot its shadow.
In the video shown above, our narrator explains that if the Groundhog Day Sprinkler’s shadow appears, then the citizens of Long Beach are told to not water their grass for at least 6 more weeks, but if the Sprinkler does not see its shadow, than it is OK to begin watering your grass sooner.
If this sprinkler did not exist, Long Beach could unnecessarily waste lots of water! And due to permanent reductions in the water supply of California, it is important to continue to conserve the water we have.
