In 2013, the Long Beach Water Department launched an internship program, in partnership with Pacific Gateway, for students to gain experience and develop the community’s workforce. This program aims to bring valuable and high-quality paid internship opportunities to college students within the water industry. Internships have been available in Engineering, Finance, Water Quality, Warehouse, Water Operations, Emergency Preparedness/Security, Facilities Maintenance and Fleet Services departments at Long Beach Water. Internships are offered year-round for a minimum of 8 weeks.
Internship Program Testimonials
“The internship with the Water Quality department was huge for me, because all of the jobs I researched after college wanted experience in the science field. I graduated and realized a Bachelor’s degree was not enough. This was my first time getting the experience I needed to further my career.” – Marissa Wiegelman, Water Quality & Treatment Intern
“I started as an intern in Water Conservation. It allowed me to learn new skills, from the proper way to write a business email all the way to the fundamentals of water resource planning.” - Rachel Davis, Water Operations Analyst at the Long Beach Water Department
“This is the first chance we’ve had an opportunity to work with a business as large as the Long Beach Water Department. This program not only allows the Long Beach Water Department to give back to the community, but it also gives our students an opportunity to work in industries they would never imagine they would be able to work in.” - JaVette Pettaway, Career Technical Training Manager and Long Beach Job Corps Center
“I’m hoping to not only gain new skills related to the water industry, but this internship will also help me be employable and be successful.” - Kevin Sanchez, Fleet Services Intern
