Stop a Leaky Toilet

A leaky toilet can result in the loss of 200 gallons of water per day or over 7,000 gallons per month. This type of leak is the most common, often silent.

What can you do to test for a leak?

  • Put food coloring or dye tablet in the toilet tank.
  • Do not flush
  • Wait 10-20 minutes and then check the toilet bowl
  • If you see color in the bowl, the tank has a leak- usually as a result of a worn flapper valve
  • Flush the toilet to ensure food coloring is not left in the bowl for an extended amount of time
  • Rubber flappers can be found at your local hardware or home improvement store inexpensively.
