PRESIDENT GLORIA CORDERO, VICE PRESIDENT NAOMI RAINEY AND SECRETARY GINA RUSHING MAGUIRE SEATED OCT. 13

LONG BEACH, CALIF. (OCT. 13, 2022) — Gloria Cordero took the gavel as president of the Long Beach Board of Water Commissioners Thursday. Incoming Vice President Naomi Rainey and Secretary Gina Rushing Maguire also took their seats.

The new commissioner roles mark the first time in Long Beach Water history that all three leadership positions have been held by women.

“I am proud that Long Beach Water continues to embrace inclusion, diversity and a focus on the future,” Cordero said. “I’m humbled and honored to lead our Board during this momentous time in water and look forward to working with my colleagues to further the department’s mission and values.”

Gloria Cordero was appointed to the Board of Water Commissioners by Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia in January 2015. She previously served as president from 2018-2019.

Cordero also has served as Long Beach’s representative on the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, or MWD, since 2016.

Commissioner and immediate past-president Bob Shannon congratulated the incoming president.

“It’s a pleasure to hand over the gavel to Commissioner Cordero. For many years she has served with distinction as a commissioner while also representing Long Beach at MWD,” Shannon said. “No board member has taken on more responsibility or worked harder to maintain the reputation of the Water Department in the community. I’m proud to serve with her.”
